Simple, Hidden Design

Blue Ox Base Plate With Arms AttachedBlue Ox Base Plate Arms Removed

This base plate's hidden design creates a clean and seamless look. The bracket arms are easily removable, creating a slick appearance when you're not flat towing. Because the arms can be removed, you also won't have to worry about banging your leg into any protruding arms when you walk by.

Blue Ox Base Plate Removable Arms

Attaching and removing the bracket arms is a breeze. To attach the arms to the base plate, simply insert them into the receivers and rotate them until they lock into place. Once you're finished towing and want to remove the arms, pull the pin to disengage the lock, rotate the arms, and remove them from the receivers. Finally, plug up the now empty receivers with the included receiver covers to help keep dirt and debris out of the base plate and provide a finished look.

Guide to Flat Towing

Flat towing your vehicle is much more convenient than using a trailer or a tow dolly. These other options take up much more storage space, leaving you less room both at home and at the campsite. In addition, securing your vehicle to a trailer or tow dolly can be a hassle and more time consuming than hooking up with a tow bar.

There are 5 basic components needed when flat towing a vehicle: a tow bar, a base plate kit, a safety cable set, tow bar wiring, and a supplemental braking system.

Towing Basics

The tow bar links your towed car to your motorhome. It attaches to the custom-fit base plates that install on the frame of your towed car. Safety cables ensure that your towed car does not separate from your motorhome in the event that your tow bar becomes detached. Tow bar wiring allows your towed vehicle's signal lights to sync up with your motorhome's tail lights, which is required by law in most states. Finally, the supplemental braking system - also required in most states - brakes your towed car when the brakes in your motorhome are activated, preventing wear on the motorhome and decreasing braking distance for your entire setup.

I have had these quick connect base plates on my ford expedition for a year now and they have worked with no issues. Currently I am writing this review from Bryce Canyon National Park were we towed our ford over 2400 miles without issue. The only negative feedback I would give is the power coding is starting to come off around the safety hook loops. Hopefully this issue has been addressed in later versions. I do enjoy using etrailer and will use them again for sure.

by:

My kit arrived a day before it was supposed to. With the detailed instructions it was so easy to install this kit myself. I used it the very next day to pull my truck it works great.

by:

The baseplate and tail light installation was pretty straight forward. My son has a lift in his garage which definitely aided getting everything installed including routing the breakaway switch and light wiring. As always etrailer was great!

Ford Expedition

Blue Ox is a Functionally excellent product. After a year all the paint is gone and the rusty base plates make my SUV (towed/daily driver) look like crap (2017 Expedition). And i wish they were more subtle appearance.

by:

Fit was correct for the application- works great

by:

2017 Ford F-150

The equipment, shipping, and videos from etrailer were top notch. Took me about 2 hours to do the whole install. Saved a ton of money doing it myself. Thanks!!

2018 Ford F-150

Apparently the very-qualified shop had quite a time installing these on my 2018 F-150 Limited (adaptive cruise control and other issues...), but they work wonderfully! I have towed the truck several times now with them on, and no problems whatsoever. Once at the destination, the chrome part comes off, and it's almost like they aren't even there. Other than installation (which is more an issue with my truck than the part itself), they're pretty much perfect.

by:

This base plate assembly was simple to install and is easy to connect to the tow bar.

by:
2018 Ford F-150

by:

Wow I can not believe how fast I received my order! Pkging was excellent and everything was wrapped very nice. I will be installing it this weekend with my son. I watched your video and it looks way to easy not to do it myself. I am also very happy with your great customer service when I called and placed my order.I will order again from your store. Thank you

It's a good idea to check to ensure you get the right fit, and I can confirm for you the correct Blue Ox base plate and Blue Ox tow bar fit for your 2012 Ford F-150. The exact parts you need are going to depend on the model of your F-150 and if you have the EcoBoost engine or not. - With EcoBoost Engine - FX2, FX4, Lariat, Platinum, XL, XLT: Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BO74FR - Without EcoBoost Engine - Harley-Davidson, STX, XL, XLT: Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX2606 - With or Without EcoBoost...

  • Parts Needed To Flat Tow A 2019 Ford F-150 Platinum 4WD
I can certainly point you in the right direction. For a base plate for your 2019 Ford F-150 Platinum 4WD I recommend the Blue ox base plate # BO74FR. This will be compatible with your Blue Ox Aventa BX7445 tow bar. For your brake light wiring I recommend using a Roadmaster diode kit. Assuming the electrical cable you have is a standard 7 way to 6 pin cable, you will need the wiring kit # RM-152, and a 6 pin socket # RM-910030-7 to complete your wiring. You will also want to install a...

  • Will Blue Ox Base Plate Kit for 2018 Ford F-150 Work With Snowplow Brackets
The correct Blue Ox Base Plate Kit for a 2018 Ford F-150 is part # BO74FR. This base plate kit mounts directly to the frame rails behind the bumper brackets. This would likely get in the way of snow plow brackets, front mounted trailer hitches, or a bull bar. Therefore, any obstructions would need to be removed before the base kit can be installed. There is no adapter or anything to make this work. I have attached some other components you might want to take a look at to complete your setup...

  • Are Frame Brackets of Blue Ox BO74FR Sold Minus the Drawbars
Because folks frequently lose them, Blue Ox offers the pins you speak of, also known as drawbars as a separate item but unfortunately they don't sell the frame mount portion of the # BO74FR as a separately available item. You'll need to purchase the full # BO74FR bracket kit. Other than the expense which I wouldn't be thrilled about either, at least you'll have extra drawbars in case you lose one.
